Monday’s can be tough! We come off a weekend in which – hopefully, we’ve turned our attention and focus elsewhere. Found some respite and relaxation totally unrelated to business or any aspect of professional life. Now it’s Monday and the beginning of a new work week.
It’s been my experience that we often need a soft “kick in the pants” to get going on Monday. Someone or something that prods us to move forward. Move forward and tackle the next task on the road to our ultimate desire. Perhaps it’s the encouraging word of friends and family. Or maybe just a quizzical look from someone in our organization who looks to us for leadership. To us to motivate them!
I hate that! That cockeyed look that says “what’s next”? As if we understand all things and have all the answers. Sort of like we’re the “wizard of oz” to whom everyone looks for answers. Answers that ultimately lie within each person – not without in the mind and heart of others.
Let me tell you what Monday sometimes brings for me. Fear! Yes, fear of not reaching the ultimate outcome. And fear that we will! Strange combination – fear of failure layered with fear of success. I call it “Gotcha Monday”.
Over the years, I’ve counseled and coached women who experienced the same mixed internal message. What if we don’t make it? And what if we do!
At the bottom of that dilemma is fear. A fear that somehow grips us when all has been said and done – with the next step accomplishing the “said and done”.
So how do we deal with Monday’s that begin with such negative emotions? If I had the answer, I wouldn’t be writing in this vein. I’d be jumping for joy that a new work week has arrived and I can get back on track. . .
In the grand scheme of all things Monday; fear can be a motivator. I can embrace it, or I can own it and move beyond it’s terrifying grip. If I embrace it; I’m likely to run from the opportunities that beckon around the next corner.
But if I own it – then perhaps it has no firm hold on my heart and mind. No determined grasp that will keep me from moving forward – in spite of!
Do you ever have Monday’s that begin this way? If not, you are indeed fortunate.
But if, like me, some Monday’s begin with the need for a swift-but soft, kick in the rear; then perhaps owning such is the only way to kick the mental lethargy and tackle the next item on the to-do list.
Oh and if fear lurks in the corner of your mental messages – own it! For no other reason than fear doesn’t want to be your companion on the journey unless it can control every thought and action.
