Sunday’s “Women’s Sunday Series” post was on how I can only love some folks at a distance. When I permit them up close; a lifetime of negative behavior makes it difficult to practice forgiveness and love them as we’ve been called to do (as ourselves).
Then this a.m. when searching for today’s MANTRA for our Facebook group, The Neighborhood, a Simple Reminders post said it all.
While seeking to love others as we love ourselves, the task is much easier when the other lifts us up on most occasions. When they are folks who love us through thick and thin and manage our rough edges with grace, charm and a measure of maturity!
Also when they love us enough to tell us the truth. In all the love they can muster because sometimes the truth can be a bitter pill to swallow. It takes a mature person and ripe friendship to withstand the truth when it’s yucky to the tongue and a jab to the heart.
But then love is more often a two-edged sword that cuts the flack from the facts about who we are. And about who the one who loves us knows we are destined to be! Love strips us of the pseudo-real and brings forth the polished real that shines with excellent eloquence.
As we grow more ‘vintage’ in life and maturity takes hold; our inner strength can handle those we know love us enough to speak the truth – truly with our best in heart and mind.
The challenge in life is to discern the real from the fake. The woman (or man) who loves us without reservation who will speak the truth when the truth can be tough to hear. It’s those folks with whom we want to surround ourselves on a continual basis. It’s those folks who will light up our lives and draw us toward that which we are designed and destined to be.
Seek them out. Search for them among the masses. They are there and when the timing is right; they’ll appear. Hold fast to the friendship and give as much or more than you get from it. Let it nurture you and be a source of nurture to the other.
And if you come to find out that there are not many of those folks in your lives; you will be immensely rich for having at least one of them to call “friend”.
