Decisions, decisions…oh, so many decisions! Have you ever felt totally overwhelmed in the decision-making process…not knowing which way to turn…which path to take? I know I have and I’m thankful to have had some good training relating on how to effectively tackle the subject.
Let’s face it, every day when we open our eyes, stretch our arms to the ceiling from our warm, comfy bed and jump out from under the covers with both feet landing on the floor…we made a decision. Now, for some of us, we would have much rather “rolled over” than “rolled out” but the necessity of going to our job or perhaps it’s the short commute to your home office…but no matter, the bottom line….you made a decision!
There are decisions you and I make each and every day that we pretty much take for granted without really thinking about it…like the example I mentioned above. Here’s another…When you went to the grocery store last weekend to stock up on items you needed to prepare this week’s meals you probably made a list, gathered your coupons, and headed out to make those purchases. Why? Because if you didn’t you would have a few other decisions to make…like, which restaurant will we go out to eat at tonight…or which pizza business delivers to our neighborhood!!!
Now, perhaps this all sounds a bit far-fetched, but the point I’m making is…everyday life, including our business life as women, requires us to make decisions that affect us personally, as well as those around us. So it’s critically important that we learn the “how and why” of effective decision-making. I’ve shared just a few tips that simple guidelines to making healthy decisions.
Tip #1: Define and clarify the problem/issue and then gather the facts relating to what decision needs to be made; then make a list of the choices available. By doing this…writing it down…seeing it in print…helps to bring more clarity to the potential alternatives available.
Tip #2: Never…ever…make an important decision (you know the kind that could be potentially life-altering) when you are tired or emotionally distraught. Take a deep breath…or two or three…or ten! This goes along with one of my favorite mantras that deals with not allowing your emotions to control your thinking. Wow, have I put that one to the test in my past!
Tip #3: Don’t rush the process…because it IS a process. If it’s worth deciding on and it’s another one of those really key life decisions, then realize that you should take your time and evaluate the pros and cons of the situation. Many times I have done this exercise by writing the positives on the left side of a legal pad and the potential negatives on the right side. Try it…it really does work! Caution…keep this in balance as “too much analysis can lead to paralysis”!
Tip #4: Solicit wise counsel. First, pray for God to give you wisdom in the overall decision-making process and then ask Him to send you to the best person(s) who have experience in this particular realm. You’ll be amazed at how this will bring peace and ease to the process as you begin to brainstorm about making the best decision. The key is to remain open-minded and listen!
Tip #5: Realize that there are usually no easy, “pat” answers to every situation. Even after following all of the steps suggested above, sometimes you just have to “go with your gut” and when you go for it, trust that you’ve done your due diligence…and rest in that knowledge!
Here’s to making some healthy, wise and fun decisions on how to spend your weekend…wishing you all the very best until next Friday!
